Darron Welch, Co-Owner/Brewmaster at Pelican Pub & Brewery, recently joined forces with Jamie Floyd, Owner/Brewmaster of Ninkasi Brewing Company to collaborate on a brew in memorial of Danny Williams, who recently passed away.
Danny's Black Gold is one of a series of Danny Williams memorial brews that are being brewed across the country, with the Pelican - Ninkasi collaboration representing the Pacific Northwest. Lauren Salazar of New Belgium Brewing in Ft. Collins, Colorado, is the organizer of the memorial brews.
Darron and Jamie are excited and honored to be a part of this memorial series, both having known Danny for many years. Danny was an integral part of the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup and the Brewers Association for many years, overseeing the cellars for the biggest beer competitions in the world - no easy task!
Colleagues for the past 15 years, the Pelican had only been open for about a year when Darron first met Jamie, the new Head Brewer at Steelhead Brewery in Eugene. Both being young, upstart brewers with a lot of common experience and goals, the two quickly became friends. Since then, Jamie has founded Ninkasi Brewing Company in Eugene, Oregon, one of the fastest growing breweries in the country.
Danny's Black Gold is a fusion of the signature stouts produced by each brewery, Tsunami Stout from the Pelican and Oatis Stout from Ninkasi. After marrying the two formulations, the beer was boosted to Imperial strength and then fermented with Rochefort Trappist yeast, yielding a unique, inspired beer, an Imperial Oatmeal Belgian-Style Stout!
We anticipate Danny's Black Gold will be on tap at the Craft Brewers Festival in San Diego the first weekend in May; at the Sasquatch Brew Fest in Eugene May 12th; and here at the Pelican as soon as it is ready. An exact release date is yet to be determined.
