Romantic Getaway Contest

During the month of February, we asked our Facebook fans to share with us their romantic stories from Pacific City and Cape Kiwanda. We hoped that many would share their stories from this little beach town, but the response was overwhelming. Over 425 people sent in stories of first love, marriage proposals, meeting that special someone and great times spent with family and friends on the Oregon Coast!

The prizes we put up for the contest included one Grand Prize of a 2-night stay here at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda. We also pledged to name 10 runners up who would each receive a $10 gift card to Pelican Brewing Company's Pub & Brewery.

If you see your name and story here, please email to claim your prize!

THANK YOU to everyone who sent in photos and stories. You've all reminded us how unique this place is and how lucky we are to be a small part of so many memories. Here are the winners and their unedited stories as they shared them at

Last February, we had decided that we were going to the coast for Valentine's day. We tried all the regular spots: Canon Beach, Seaside, Manzanita, Garibaldi, Rockaway, and all were full. We had camped at the site near Pacific City, Oregon and loved it, but there was a terrible storm. We decided to call The Inn at Cape Kiwanda with hopes that they had an opening and were so excited that not only did they have an opening, but it was a king size suite with a perfect view, Champagne, Chocolates, and wine tasting! The wind and rain howled against our glass doors and we did not think we would get out on the beach at all. But the morning was glorious-eye of the storm-and we got beautiful pictures. I didn't think we would find any shells to add to our memory box, but as we were headed back, there was a pile of the most beautiful shells half buried outside the Pelican Pub! We gathered the shells and a small amount of sand and they now sit in a beautiful vase with "Pacific City: Your Little Beach Town, February 2014" written on it. It was the best Valentine's day we had ever had and the couple running the Inn were the most friendly and accommodating people we had ever met! We hope to go back for our anniversary in April, but would love to win a trip there sooner!

Long before meeting, we both separately enjoyed and needed our "time at the beach". When life was stressful and overwhelming, when there weren't enough hours in the day, we would independently run away to take in the gentle calming rhythm of the waves, wind, rock and sand. Separately we gained strength, nourished by the natural power and beauty and, after meeting, we found that we shared this drive, this need, to seek out this place of natural solace.

Our lives intertwined and, as we discussed our plans to marry, we knew that our love for each other would be forever symbolized with Our Rock as the corner stone. Everything fell into place, as naturally as could be, and before we knew it we were standing together sharing our vows, our rings, our lives and our view of Our Rock in Pacific City.

To this day, we still make regular trips to this little beach town. Sometimes we go camping, stay at the Inn, eat at the pub, or just have a scone and a cup of coffee. Walking on the beach, sitting by the campfire, or marveling at the dory fleet surfing in, we still find our cares and stress melt away, in the shadow of Our Rock.

Rain or shine, storm or calm, when we are there with our toes in the sand, we are reminded of how we began, drawn together with Our Rock in the distance, keeping its eternal vigil, a symbol of our hopes, dreams, and the love we share.

Like Our Rock, our love can weather any storm, undeterred, as we walk hand-in-hand into our happily ever after.

I have been lucky enough to visit Pac City many times in my life. My grandparents own a small beach house off the airport strip and we have been able to make wonderful family memories here. I have seenPacific City: Your Little Beach Town grow and change so much, but my love for the little beach town always remains strong. In 2009, I started bringing a wonderful man Eric Bradley to our beach house and Pac City soon became OUR favorite place. His love for my family, our memories made at the beach and the little beach town grew just like mine. Five years later, this man proposed to me on a spontaneous trip to Pac City. We climbed the dune and walked towards the water, past the "do not enter" signs. We arrived at our favorite spot, which a few months before we were lucky to see a whale right below us. It was such a perfect moment, enjoying a growler of Pelican beer, the company of our two closest friends, he proposed to me. The timing of the sunset couldn't of been more perfect, the moment couldn't of been more perfect A few months ago, my grandfather passed away and there have been talks about selling our home in Pacific City. As much as this saddens me, I feel so lucky to have all of the wonderful memories here and this city will always be close to my heart.

I spent one of the best days of my life sitting on the bluffs in Cape Kiwanda and couldn't imagine a more perfect place to re-visit with my sweet husband. My husband Kyle (long time, long distance boyfriend at the time) and I decided to make an impromptu trip to the coast to escape the craziness of our busy lives and spend the day relaxing on the beach. We loaded the car and spent the day hiking, taking pictures and sitting on the bluffs talking about our future. I wanted a picture standing in front of the incredible crashing waves and Kyle humored me and said he'd take my picture. When I got back to our spot on the beach I was looking at the pictures he had just taken and there it was on the camera screen: the most beautiful picture of a stunning ring sitting in a box on the sand. I was completely surprised and speechless! Kyle pulled the ring out of his pocket, got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was a magical moment with my sole mate sitting in front of me telling me how much he loved me, the waves crashing on the bluffs and the sun shining on my back. It was the perfect proposal and I will remember it for the rest of my life. We have now been married for 3 years now and haven't been on a single date since our daughter was born 14 months ago. A coastal getaway is exactly what us love birds need!

September 2009: my boyfriend and I went on our first trip together to Pacific City! We stayed at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda. Our first night, we sat on the balcony watching the sunset and drinking champagne. It was then that we both realized we were in love. We must have been thinking it at the same time because Josh said it just as I was thinking it! Now we are married and visit the Inn almost every year  Pacific City will forever hold a special place in our hearts

We have been coming to Pacific City for over 10 years. We stayed at the Inn many times over the years. We always loved it, because they were so generous and kind and welcoming to our labs. We were there in July 2007 with our youngest lab on his first beach trip, and my husband proposed right there on the beach across the street. On March 15, 2008, we were married in the Pelican Pub, for a wedding my family still talks about several years later. We still visit there multiple times a year, and now we bring our three year old daughter along with our two labs. It is truly a magical place, and one where we have spent many of the best moments of our lives.

We traveled in the dark of the night; a spontaneous trip to the waves of the beach. It was about 12am when we arrived to the beach at Pacific City from Beaverton. We sat and talked and I playful suggested we should see who could climb the sand hill the fastest. I exited the car first and had a head start but he was faster at getting up through the sand. When we both reached reached the top he took me by the hand and told me he had a surprise to show me. We came up to the area where the waves were crashing against the rocks below. It was so beautiful watching the water sprays glisten from the lights behind us. We sat down together and just watched the waves; hand in hand, cuddled in each others arms. In the midst of the sounds of the waves crashing and spraying we heard another sound. I leaned in to listened closer and gasped. He giggled and assured me that what I heard was in deed what I thought I had heard. I became so excited. SO EXCITED!!! Jumping up and down! The coolest thing that I have ever heard. It was the whales! The whales! THE WHALES!! It was almost like they were singing just for us! There musical notes bounced off the rock ledge behind us; like a kind of ampa theater. I could have sat there forever, but I could only stay till I could no longer feel our fingers and faces anymore. I hated to have to leave but I knew I would never forget. NEVER!! This was 15 years ago and I'll always remember it like it was yesterday. One of my most vivid cherished memories. THE WHALES!

It was labor day 2012. My plan was to propose to my, now wife, on the cliff left of the big dune where the trees are. I called my parents and told them there were 200 votive candles under their bed in the Rv and Whitney and I would be coming at sunset the next day. I had all these sketches of how I wanted it set up, but then mother nature had other ideas. My mom called the next morning and said it was too windy to do it on the cliff but she had another idea.

We arrived and everything was set we walked out to the beach. On our way Whitney went to put her phone in my pocket that had the ring in it. I quickly turned and offered my other pocket. I thought I had been too obvious and ruined the surprise. We kept walking the sunset was perfect I roughly knew where to go but wasn't 100% sure. My mom said it was set up in a cave by the tide pools. We get to the tide pools and I looked up above and saw my mom and her friends pointing where to go. "Hey babe let's go check out that cave." Closer...closer. "Alex, turn around I think we're walking in on someone's moment." "We sure are keep going."

I propose, we kiss, then I see my dads friend was taking pictures of us during our entire walk on the beach. I must say they are my most cherished pictures. Thank you to all involved and Pacific City fir being the perfect spot to pull it all off.

My wife Jill and I have been visiting and enjoying what the Pelican and Pacific city have to offer for most all of the 22 plus years we've been together. I have been dining and drinking great food and beer there for way longer past that. Besides the love of my wife and Two beautiful Girls, there is a love affair of many kinds with what I would relate as the most iconic and totally Oregon beach on the Coast. I am certain that we will continue to make regular trips down as there is something about pacific City and the Pelican pub that we never tire of. When I take solo rides on my Harley, it is where I usually end up.

My husband and I have many, many wonderful memories with our toes in the sand on the Pacific City beach. By far our most favorite place to be. It brings tears to my eyes when I think of the times we have spent there. Many romantic walks, many moments of watching our kids play who are now grown and making their own Pac City memories. There are far too many memories to put in one single post. We cherish Pacific City and all it has to offer and look forward to making many more memories.

We just made our first trip to Pacific City last month! It was perfect! We watched the game at the Pub, had breakfast at the cafe, climbed the dunes, sat and watched the sunset, built a puzzle in our room after dark, fed the bunnies! It was, by far, the best vacation we had been on. It was very sour of the moment and the hotel staff was simply the best! We could stare in awe at that rock for hours! Can't wait to go back!
