I always thought of Killer Whales as being a species that stayed much further North than the Oregon Coast. To my delight and absolute surprise we spotted a small pod of these beautiful mammals around our Haystack Rock the other day. The unmistakable dorsal fins were slicing thru the water, submerging, and reappearing again as they swam. I was instantly turned into a jaw-dropped, speechless fool as I stood mesmerized by them with my face plastered against a window. As soon as I came to my senses I immediatly put a call out to Cottage Owners who I knew were in their units and told them to get to their decks and windows and take a look.
As it turns out, the whales come down this far each year (it's a bit of a coastal secret). This particular pod had actually been in the area for a couple days before I saw them, and several were seen breaching by other guests. You can bet that I will be staring out the window every chance I get for the next week to see if I get a chance to see them again. You never know what you're going to see out here, so bring your binocs, a camera and a keen eye the next time you come down!!
